Description
The pieces of the chime are the charitra upkaran, the few articles a sadhu or sadhvi keeps: the ogho, the muhpatti, the patra and the rest, each made small in clay, wood and wool and hung to turn slowly in the air. For a newborn it is the first set of Jain shapes seen every day; for an adult it is a reminder, at eye level, of the life of renunciation.
Good for: newborns and infants when hung over the ghodiya or palana, and any age as a hanging in the home or the upashray.
How families use it: hang it above the cradle when the baby comes home, move it to a window or the puja room later, and give it at a naming ceremony, a diksha chaab or to a tapasvi at a parna. The paper version and the full range are under Jain Baby Mobile.
